A scoping review of the use of visual aids in health education materials for persons with low-literacy levels

To conduct a scoping review on the literature visual aids in health education for persons with low-literacy. A methodology was employed. Pre-defined selection criteria identified 47 studies inclusion. Data were extracted relation to: (a) definitions of low-literacy and literacy, (b) population studied, (c) research country, (d) consent procedures, (e) used, (f) development aids, (g) targeted outcomes. Visual developed demonstrated statistically significant improvements literacy outcomes, benefits medication adherence comprehension also reported. Pictograms videos most effective aids. Only one study adapted procedures participants. materials may benefit levels, but large gaps base are evident. Experimental low- middle-income countries, particular focus participants is needed. aid design needs to include stakeholders. Consent decision-making need be specifically
